Newborn Safe Sleep: Simple Practices That Help Reduce SIDS Risk
Why Safe Sleep Practices Matter So Much in the First Year
How and where a baby sleeps in the first months of life has a real effect on reducing the risk of sudden unexpected infant death, including SIDS. The good news is that the core recommendations are simple and don't require special products — just consistent habits every time your baby sleeps.
Back to Sleep, Every Time
Babies should be placed on their backs for every nap and every night's sleep, not just some of the time. Side sleeping carries nearly as much risk as stomach sleeping, so "back is best" applies consistently, including for babies with mild reflux, who can still safely sleep flat on their back.
A Firm, Flat, and Empty Sleep Surface
A firm, flat crib, bassinet, or play yard — with only a well-fitted sheet and nothing else — is the safest sleep surface. Pillows, loose blankets, soft toys, cushions, and crib bumpers should all be kept out of the sleep space, since soft or loose items increase suffocation risk.
Room Sharing Without Bed Sharing
Keeping your baby's sleep space in your room, close to your bed but on its own separate surface, for at least the first several months is associated with a meaningfully lower risk than bed sharing. If you bring your baby into your bed to feed or soothe them, the general safe sleep guidance is to return them to their own sleep space before you fall asleep yourself.
Things That Don't Reduce Risk, Even If They Seem Protective
It's worth knowing that swaddling by itself does not reduce SIDS risk, and should always be combined with back sleeping and stopped once a baby starts trying to roll over. Similarly, home monitors marketed for SIDS prevention are not considered a substitute for following safe sleep practices directly.
Breastfeeding, Smoke-Free Homes, and Tummy Time
A few other habits are consistently linked with lower risk: breastfeeding where possible, keeping your home and car completely smoke-free, and giving your baby supervised, awake tummy time each day once they're alert, which also supports healthy motor development.
If You Have Questions About Your Newborn's Sleep or Care
Safe sleep is just one part of newborn care that's often covered during routine neonatal check-ups alongside feeding, weight gain, and jaundice monitoring. If anything about your baby's sleep, breathing, or routine feels uncertain, it's always reasonable to raise it at your next visit rather than waiting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe for my baby to sleep on their side instead of their back? No — side sleeping carries nearly as much risk as stomach sleeping. Babies should be placed on their backs for every sleep, every time, including babies with mild reflux.
Can I use a pillow, blanket, or soft toy in the crib to make my baby more comfortable? No. The sleep surface should be firm and flat with only a well-fitted sheet — pillows, loose blankets, soft toys, and crib bumpers should all be kept out, as they increase suffocation risk.
Is it safer to bring my baby into bed with me at night? Bed sharing carries meaningfully higher risk than room sharing. The safer approach is keeping your baby's own sleep space close to your bed, and returning them to it if you bring them in briefly to feed or soothe them.
Does swaddling my baby help reduce SIDS risk? Swaddling by itself does not reduce SIDS risk. If you do swaddle, your baby should still always be placed on their back, and swaddling should stop once they show signs of trying to roll over.
